Sound Map: Memory & Discovery (Discovery Bay)

Introduction Every time you listen to a recording, it's a revisit to the past even if it have ceased to be. This realisation of the nature of recording lead me to this topic for the project. For the sound map, I revisit Discovery Bay (DB), a community I spend my childhood in but seldom visited since on 21 October, 2022. From morning to evening, I carried the Sony PCM-D50 recorder with a pair of binaural mic , went on a journey that is half on recovering childhood memories, half on discovering the new changes after I left.  One key feature in the soundscape of DB was the frequent disturbance of sound produced by aeroplanes soaring in the sky due to its proximity to the Hong Kong International Airport. In the past, I had always found it disturbing. From a music ecology perspective however, it was what makes this place special. Songs from birds and insects also appeared frequently across recordings due to DB being a suburban area. Another recurring sound you may notice in the recordi

Assignment 2 - Soundscape Equipment: Initially, I borrowed a SONY portable microphone from the Music Department for this assignment. The portable microphone is a recorder that captures stereo audio from the environment. Unfortunately, the recordings were capturing the sound of strong wind, and the tracks were therefore abandoned.  To re-record for this assignment, I downloaded a unique sound recording app called the "Recorder", which is an app that allows stereo recording on the iPhone microphone. The app also provides multiple file formats for the recorded tracks, such as "wav." or "m4a.". Users could also choose to record the stereo sound from the front or bottom side of the phone, making the app favourable for different users as one might have a different preference in holding their phones. I recorded all ten tracks in m4a format, stereo (front) mic, at an appreciative sampling rate of 44100Hz.  (Here is a little surprising function in this app that I h

Assignment 2 - Soundmap Law Vanessa Lok Tung  3035825095    I went to Lung Fu Shan and Wu Tip Shan on 12 th and 13 th October respectively to develop my soundmap. I chose these sites because they are close to my daily lives. I want to discover sounds in the nearby natural settings that I often neglect. Lung Fu Shan is located next to the University of Hong Kong, while Wu Tip Shan is located in Fanling, which is only just 10min walk from my home. Besides, I documented some interesting sound clips near my home in day and night. Below are the sound clips that were recorded by my phone and Sony PCM-D50 recorder with binaural mic. Enjoy!   1. Lung Fu Shan Once I went up to Lung Fu Shan from the entrance in centennial campus at around 4pm, I was attracted by the rustling sound made by the dead foliage at the side of the hiking trail. The leaves made a crispy and crunchy sound in the wind. It sounds like splintering of glass or glass wind chime. After a short walk, I passed a metal
