Commercial Soundscapes of Han SHAO at Tsim Sha Tsui

 On 17 September, I went to the Tsim Sha Tsui(尖沙咀) area to experience programmed music. I visited 20 locations and identified five of the more representative ones for my fieldwork assignment. At the same time, Meanwhile, try to find the relationship between commercial soundscapes and the selection of programmed music.


7-Eleven

7-Eleven's stores are very densely distributed in Hong Kong as retail convenience stores. Any corner of Hong Kong will find a 7-Eleven store. Meanwhile, 7-Eleven also gives people a convenient and relaxed shopping environment. Two audio is simultaneously placed in the doorway and above the cashier. Regarding the programmed music of 7-Eleven, it will mainly choose some light instrumental pop music as programmed music, which matches the brand tone of 7-Eleven and gives people a relaxed and cozy shopping environment.




Harbour City(海港城)

Harbour City is a shopping center that is the largest in Hong Kong. The location I chose for my recording was the G floor, where the most famous luxury brands, such as Hermès, DIOR, etc., gather. Because this place is too large, so I can not count the total number of speakers at the same time sound. Harbour City offers listeners a high-class soundscape to experience those luxury brands because piano music has always given a sense of sophistication.



COS

COS is my favorite fashion brand, and I often choose COS clothes. This is a high-end brand of H&M and is committed to supporting the world of art and design through collaboration. COS partners with established and emerging artists, studios, and galleries worldwide. So in the choice of programmed music, COS also favors more avant-garde pop music, fully demonstrating COS for pursuing avant-garde and fashion.



Watsons(屈臣氏)

Watsons, a boutique selling pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, is known as the first choice for many Hong Kong residents to buy goods, and there are not only professional shoppers but also professional pharmacists. Country music is used as the background music here.



DS Groceries(大生生活超市)

Dai Sang Groceries is a very affordable place to buy, varies from wine, Chinese delicacies, confectioneries, chocolate, and nuts. The programmed music here is a very unusual choice of jazz music, usually found in bars or cafes. I was amazed to hear this music here. Jazz music usually gives people a free and relaxing experience that matches its slogan, "We aim to create the delightful shopping experience."





HOT TOYS

Hot toys mainly sells Action figures. When I entered the store, I could feel the contrasting interior design. In traditional stores, the interior design is usually bright and charming. But the interior here is mainly black with fluorescent colors, which has an exceptionally youthful atmosphere. In terms of programmed music principles, Hip Pop is dominant. I think that both the interior design and the music are designed to cater to his customers. The people who shop here tend to be young.
