Assignment 2 (Soundscape of Peng Chau) - Yip Huen Isis
I decided to create a sound map at Peng Chau. The sound recordings on the map were made on Monday, October 10th, between 15:00 and 16:45. Peng Chau is just another tourist attraction to most people. To me, however, it is a wonderful place filled with some of my most vivid memories, including how I spent my childhood fishing with my late grandfather. Peng Chau is home to people with big hearts despite its small size. The sound recordings all have the same theme: 'The Daily Life of the Peng Chau People.'

When my friend and I arrived on Monday, we went straight to Chaya Daruma, a Japanese Western-style cafe just a two-minute walk from the public pier. The andante guitar foreground music (similar to Muji's) immediately drew my attention; it was pretty interesting that they played the music through a blue-tooth speaker outside the cashier. You can hear coffee brewing if you listen carefully to the sound recording below. I believe this is well preserved because it is uncommon for the younger generation to be willing to operate a novel cafe in Peng Chau that brings life and vitality to the area. Customers can choose between sitting on tatamis or regular chairs at the cafe.
Then there was a bike shop a half-minute walk from the cafe. A couple of teenage boys were renting bikes and testing the bells. It's music to my ears (oh, it's a D, haha), and they seemed to be having a good time biking on a Monday. I'd never seen so many common cuckoos and sparrows gathered in one place before, so I took out my H6 recorder and recorded them. They appeared to be having an intense conversation... I thought it would be a great idea to record the sounds of a traditional store. The shop owner was very sociable and welcoming to customers, and she initiated conversations with them, which was unusual. Very heartwarming and nostalgic because my late grandfather would get me traditional Hakka snacks made from Chinese fevervine fruit every time we passed by.
The stray cats at Peng Chau are considered one of the town's mascots. The majority of visitors to this location are cat lovers. So I decided that recording some of the sounds of how people interact with the stray cats (playing and feeding them) was essential. The recordings were made near the Lung Mo Temple and the praya. They are not stray cats because they have grown accustomed to human contact. Also, this elderly lady had returned from Canada and was riding her bike from her house to the public pier daily to feed the cats. She even took those cats to the vet regularly, treating them like her own children.
Along the praya, you can hear the sound of waves, the sea breeze, people taking photos, aeroplanes flying high above the sky, and boat motors running. These sounds simply relax me and allow me to forget about my worries. I look forward to a light life and a kind of true happiness because reality would never allow me to.
I recorded the soundscapes with an H6 handy recorder and a Zoom MSH-6 mid-side microphone capsule for this assignment. The most challenging aspect of this assignment was that I couldn't install the sound files onto the sound map because the file sizes were too large, and I don't think compressing would be a good idea because it would reduce the quality of the soundtracks. So I deceived myself into directly uploading the sound files here to preserve the tracks' originality. Instead, I would keep the link to the sound map below. Despite my circumstances, I had a lot of fun recording and creating graphics for the sound map with Adobe Illustrator.
Enjoy hearing the sound recordings and strolling the map!
