Assignment#2 Sound Map----YANG Sha

Sound Map

The scope of this sound map is mainly my understanding of the unique environmental sounds of Hong Kong, such as the sounds made by traffic, the sounds of nature, and the sounds of young people's recreation places. To create this sound map, I used the Sony CPM-D50 with binaural mic which borrowed from the school and the built-in recording function of iPhone13. I think the biggest challenge is recording natural sounds. For example, when I wanted to record ocean waves, the wind was too strong and it was easy to blow off the wind shield of the microphone. And when I recorded the waterfall, I had to walk over the rocks in the pool to get to the waterfall, the rocks were slippery, the environment was dangerous, etc.

1.University of Hong Kong Street Music
On 26 September morning, in the way I just got out of the run run shaw building, I saw a special group, they are about five or six people, barefoot sitting on a big carpet, the carpet have various ethnic customs instrument, has hands, has a long horn like telescope, there are a lot of homemade fruit shape of sand hammer... I don't know what melody they were playing, but it sounded like a special kind of yoga music, and I found it so interesting that I recorded it on my phone.

2.Ding Ding CarOn September 30, I took the device out to record. Luckily, there was a ding ding car parked. I quickly took out the debugging device and recorded the "ding ding" when it started. The Ding Ding car, which is only available on Hong Kong Island, has become an important urban cultural symbol in Hong Kong.

3.Hennessy Road traffic lightsWhen I saw this assignment, the first thing that came to my mind was the traffic lights on the streets of Hong Kong. The traffic lights here have no digital countdown, but they are very loud and have three speeds. At first, I thought it was a feature of transportation, but later I learned that it is convenient for the blind to judge whether they can pass by ear. It's an essential sound in life.

4.Escalator announcements at Sai Ying Pun MTR StationMTR escalator announcements in Hong Kong Living in Hong Kong, I can't avoid taking Hong Kong subway. On the evening of September 30, I took the Sony PCM-D50 with binaural mic borrowed from the school to the subway station of Sai Ying Pun. There was a long escalator in and out of the station (I found it in most subway stations), which was usually accompanied by prompts in Cantonese, Mandarin, and English It is convenient to remind people of different languages to travel safely. For me, this is not only a safety warning sound, but also accompany me to go to school every day, on the way home from school "beautiful music". So I recorded it.

5.Sun Yat Sen Park childrens playground
There is a small children's playground in Zhongshan Memorial Park near my home. I often come here for a walk after dinner. Many parents also bring their children to play here. The laughter of the children was very healing, and after dinner on September 30, I brought my recording equipment to collect the "happiness".

6.Haidilao Hot Pot Restaurant (Lee Stage Plaza, Causeway Bay)Haidilao is a popular brand of hot pot chain in China, very suitable for party, birthday in haidilao will play a piece of music called "song of blessing birthday" (as far as I know a few years ago because music is disabled copyright issues, and is now using authorized), October 1st National Day, I went to the stage of the square, causeway bay, the 19th floor of haidilao for dinner, Fortunately, there were many people celebrating their birthdays on this day. As I had not borrowed any equipment yet, I had to use my mobile phone to record the audio of Haidilao employees celebrating their birthdays.

7.Waterfall Bay ParkOn October 2nd, I went to Waterfall Bay Park. Huafu Falls is located at the end of Waterfall Bay Park. The water source comes from Pok Fu Lam Reservoir. Although it is only about 15 meters high, its proximity to the city is probably unique, and there are mysterious urban legends.

8.Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens October 7, with my classmates in the equipment to the botanical garden in Hong Kong, the zoo in my imagination will have a wonderful concert "animals", in fact the animals there are silent, visit the whole park just recording to some birds, including a bird called yellow casqued hornbill cries very funny, when I took the microphone closer to it, it is also very to force "singing".

9.Sha Wan Swimming Pool, Hong KongOn October 8th, I went to Hong Kong Sha Wan Swimming Pool, Hong Kong which is located on the waterfront promenade in the southern District of Hong Kong Island. There is a small bridge in Sha Wan, which is known as the most beautiful residual bridge in Hong Kong. I recorded the sound of waves beating on the bridge while standing on the narrow bridge at low tide.

10.Small Word at Disneyland For the last stop on the sound map, I chose Disney's Small World, which is a must for me every time I come to Hong Kong Disney. Along with the familiar song "It's a Small World", enjoy the culture of the seven continents and four oceans in a boat. Dreamy decorations and small figurines dressed in local costumes immerse you in a fairy tale world. It is worth mentioning that the lyrics of this song have different languages, and my selection is the part that contains Cantonese, Mandarin and English at the end, which I think has a beautiful meaning of "global village".
