Class Assignment #2: Sound Map
Liu Yushuo
The Sound of the Subway Station: I chose to record the sound of the subway because my recording journey started here. Before, I was in a hurry to catch the subway. I have never listened to the sound in the subway station so seriously, the sound of the subway entering and leaving, the sound of the platform reporting, the footsteps of people coming and going... It's a pity that there are many I didn't record the sound at the time. Now calm down and listen carefully, and experience a lot of feelings that I have never felt before.
I also recorded the sound of the escalator inside the MTR.
The voice of the church: I was overjoyed to hear that there will be a choir performance in the church. I used to see it in film and television dramas, and now this is the first time I have been there. The ethereal voice and the beautiful and sacred singing added a more solemn atmosphere to the church. When I have nothing to do, I really need to come to the church to feel the atmosphere. The singing of the choir can make people intoxicated. I feel that this unique artistic beauty can calm people's inner impetuosity.
The sound of the waves at Belcher Bay Promenade, Kennedy Town: It was windy that day, and there was a rumbling sound from the waves from a distance. The waves got closer and closer, and the sound became louder and louder, as if there were thousands of troops and horses. They beat the shore together, one wave after another. The back waves directly slap the front waves on the ground.
Chungking Mansions: Although I have heard that this place is dangerous for a long time, I have seen a movie "Chongqing Forest" filmed here before, so I am curious about the sound in this building. At the door, a bunch of Indians pulled me and asked me if I wanted to go in for dinner, and they swarmed me to give me the menu. When I walked in, I heard music with a strong Indian style, as if I walked into India in an Indian movie. Same. The music at the entrance of the curry box restaurant and the shop on the 2nd floor that sells electronic equipment such as stereos made me feel like I was transferred in time and space, and I really came to India. Next to this audio shop is a restaurant that looks good. Because I haven't been here before, and now many shops are closed, I don't know if it's because of COVID-19. I recorded the sound of the electric fan. Coincidentally, all the shops in the electric fan area were closed. At this time, the sound from the electric fan made the place even more empty. The sound brought me back to reality.
A square in Kennedy Town: There is a special area for dogs to play in the square, and there are many dogs playing in it. The sound of dogs running, barking, and drinking water filled the area. An interesting thing happened. The dogs swarmed me after seeing the food in my hand and took all my food away. It really surprised me. But they were obviously not offensive to me, just wanted to taste the food too.
Filipino maids near Central: They sing and dance in groups. This scene is very unique. Although I have seen such videos before, what I saw with my own eyes today has refreshed my new understanding of this group of Filipino maids. They use cardboard husks on the ground and start talking, eating, etc., regardless of safety or comfort. I have seen that many people will use their mobile phones to connect speakers and microphones to sing songs. It can be seen that they are purely entertaining themselves; some even start live performances with singing and dancing.
Wong Tai Sin: I learned that this is one of the most representative religious and folk customs in Hong Kong. It is said that praying for blessings and blessings is particularly effective. In 2014, it was successfully selected as the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage projects. You can hear the voices of people begging for the lottery and kneeling, people talking to the gods, and the voices of people talking. Being in it, I feel that Wong Tai Sin has transcended religious belief itself and has become a belief in the hearts of Hong Kong people, bringing blessings to Hong Kong people.
The sound of the fountain in Medy Road: The fountain was not equipped with music, and there were not many people at that time, so the sound was pure. But it was the sheer sound that attracted me so much that I couldn't help but want to record it.
Sounds of birds near Tsim Sha Tsui: Recorded on National Day, 1 October, you can see flags hanging in many places and birds lazily wandering around the ground nearby.
Most of the recording was done using Sony's PCM-D50 recorder. The sound of the waves and the dog playing was recorded using an iPhone. The reason is that I stumbled upon a dedicated dog play area in a park in Kennedy Town. Because of my love for dogs, I turned on the recording function of my iPhone and rushed in. I think it is really interesting to record these sounds, it allows me to listen better and feel the sounds in my life that I used to think are inconspicuous.
