On 17 September, I went to the Tsim Sha Tsui(尖沙咀) area to experience programmed music. I visited 20 locations and identified five of the more representative ones for my fieldwork assignment. At the same time, Meanwhile, try to find the relationship between commercial soundscapes and the selection of programmed music. 7-Eleven 7-Eleven's stores are very densely distributed in Hong Kong as retail convenience stores. MUSI3041 Assignment4: Musical Instrument Jingwen Liang The instrument I choose for assignment 4 is the Thumb Piano. Thumb Piano is an African ethnic instrument. In different African countries, the Thumb Piano has different names, for example, Kalimba is the name of the instrument in Kenya, while in Zimbabwe it is called Mbira, the Congolese call it Likembe, and it is also known by the name Sanza and Thumb Piano. It is named mainly for the thin sheet on the body that is plucked with the Thumb, and is very portable in size. Fieldwork on Commercial Soundscapes MUSI3041: Music and the Environment Assignment 1 September 2022 Over a Saturday afternoon I witnessed many different acoustic experiences in various places as I still look to find my way around a new area. In a mall lobby was a live, 4-piece jazz band. We went to watch and we were not alone; many shoppers had stopped to listen for extended periods of time. This was not light, background jazz but up-beat and at a relative volume; much like a performance. Rather than encouraging people to buy more and spend more money- as is often understood to be the aim of music in malls- this caused people to stop and spend time outside of shops and not browsing or spending. Elsewhere in the mall high-end shops were observed; fancy jewellery and stylish handbag stores.
