 Assignment 1 - Commercial Soundscapes Law Vanessa Lok Tung  3035825095   In the afternoon of 18 th September, I went to the China Hong Kong City and the Harbor City to experience the commercial soundscape of Tsim Sha Tsui. There was no background music playing in both shopping malls.   Once I entered the China Hong Kong City, I was attracted by a store called ‘Kids Kids Cars’ because there were loud and recognizable children’s songs. It pops out in a quiet environment, and thus constructs a clear separation of space between the store and the mall. It also creates a space enclosing an existing recreational activity, that is, car racing, and shapes a livelier vibe in the mall since most shops were closed. I noticed that the music was broadcasted from the floor standing speakers in the front of the store, and the speakers from the ceiling.   MUSI3042 assignment 1 On a bright Wednesday morning, I visited the area of Causeway Bay that I often refer to as my second home - yes, the road leading to Windsor House and H&M. No part of Hong Kong is ever not crowded, so a crush of people milled about even though it was nearing noon on a weekday. Above the rhythmic noises of construction, traffic signals and people’s voices, I focused on what was important. With the voice memos app open on my iPhone, I was ready to observe the different kinds of music being played in various stores around me. The first place I entered was, of course,  H&M , one of the most popular clothing brands targeted especially towards youth. I walked in expecting to hear one of today’s most overplayed hits, but surprisingly couldn’t recognise the song. The lyrics were half-English, half-French, and it sounded relaxing, almost lazy.  Truth To Power----OneRepublic Yunrui Zheng Script: Right now, we are facing a man-made disaster on a global scale, climate change. The disconnect between awareness and action seems to get wider and wider with each passing year. So today, I want to introduce a protest song by OneRepublic , Truth To Power , which intends to advocate for environmental awareness and inspire us to take action. Minutes turn to hours, hours turn to years, and I've seen truth turn to power. Truth To power , is an original pop song written for the film, “ An Inconvenient Sequel, Truth To Power ”. From my perspective, “Truth To Power”, is actually "Speak truth to power". The "speaker" is the "earth" and the "power" is the "human". So it actually was written from the viewpoint of Mother Earth, how she sees us and how our actions affect each other and the planet.
